The Big Something is a limited-edition sculpture by Japanese artist En Iwamura. The work is cast in quartz sand and limited to 20 sculptures in each of three colourways — blue, black and grey. The use of sand as a material gives each piece a distinctive tactile surface and weighty presence, making it feel like a small-scale original work, while the repeated lines across the surface echo the raked patterns found in traditional Zen Buddhist sand gardens. The Big Something is a three-dimensional interpretation of the 2D artwork created for our previous collaboration with Iwamura, Knots.

The Big Something is also the title and subject of En Iwamura’s first children’s book, created in collaboration with The-Art-Form. The story follows a young boy — based on Iwamura’s own son — who discovers something mysterious beneath the ground. Written and illustrated by Iwamura, the book brings the character and idea of The Big Something to life through his distinctive coloured ink drawings. A special edition of the book, accompanied by a hand-finished print by Iwamura, will be available from The-Art-Form following the release of the sculpture edition.

En Iwamura is a Japanese contemporary artist whose practice spans sculpture, painting, drawing and installation. His work draws on Japanese visual culture, childhood memories and the forms of Jōmon ceramics, reinterpreting them through his distinctive language of colourful, rounded figures and abstracted faces. Iwamura has exhibited internationally, with his work presented by leading galleries including Almine Rech, where his Glances and Echoes exhibition was held in Shanghai in 2024. His work has also been shown at major international art fairs and is held in private and institutional collections worldwide, establishing him as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Japanese art.
